Smiley's Heating and air recommends 3 steps in Fall to ensure your HVAC system keeps running smoothly.

Fall in Florida may not bring a dramatic change in the weather, but it is still a smart time to make sure your HVAC system is ready for the months ahead. A few simple checks can help your system run more efficiently—and help you spot an issue before a heat or a cold front rolls through.

1. Check Your Air Filter

A dirty air filter makes your system work harder to move air through your home. Check your filter monthly and replace it when it looks dusty or clogged. A clean filter supports better airflow, helps protect your equipment, and can even help keep energy use in check.

Not sure which filter your system needs? Check the size printed along the edge of your current filter before purchasing a replacement.

2. Clear Space Around Your Outdoor Unit

Your outdoor A/C unit needs room to breathe. Take a few minutes to clear away leaves, grass clippings, mulch, branches, and other debris around the unit. Keep plants trimmed back so there is open space around the sides and top.

One important reminder: you can gently remove loose debris from around the unit, but leave internal cleaning and repairs to a trained HVAC professional.

3. Test Your Thermostat Settings

Before you truly need heat, switch your thermostat to heating mode and raise the temperature a few degrees above the current room temperature. Listen for the system to start and make sure warm air begins coming through the vents.

If your system does not respond, makes unusual noises, or you notice weak airflow, it is best to schedule service before the issue becomes more inconvenient.
